Statement

The passage of time is a transformative act, one that can be tracked using the landmarks of light, space, and body. I often find myself observing how light affects a subject, the temperature of color can signify both natural and artificial light. I will paint my subject from a photo taken instantaneously, staged, or studied from life in my work, this allows me to carefully compose visual elements or capture the authenticity and immediacy of a moment. I utilize space and form to ground the viewer in a setting that allows for a narrative to be told in either sequence or moment.

Using impermanent materials allows me to demonstrate the fragility of a fleeting moment through the delicate application and removal of layers. Each piece connects directly to me, as I derive my subject matter from my home and the spaces I occupy.  I hold fascination with domestic space or objects and the way it inflicts change and is shaped by the people who reside in it. My pieces serve as a collection or amalgamation of every repeated action, object, and experience that occur inside the home. In my early works I demonstrate control of light and contrast, however my focus has shifted to the dissolution of the moment through destructive action. Ghost images are formed by the inertia of the media, thus immortalizing its original event. Recurrence of application, performance, and destruction are stained into a present that is constantly fading away.
